SCOTTSDALE, Ariz - Joanne Winter, one of 14 original Master Professionals in the LPGA's Teaching and Club Professional Division, founded the Arizona Silver Belle Championship Golf Tournament in 1971.
She was the recipient of the 1995 Ellen Griffin Rolex Award, given annually by the LPGA T&CP Division to the individual who has demonstrated in their teachings spirit, love, and dedication during a lifetime of service to the game of golf.
During Winter's 30-plus years of teaching, she worked with students of all levels, including LPGA pros such as Jerilyn Britz, Robin Walton, Alice Miller and Julie Stanger Pyne. She was also a noted lecturer and participated in many seminars conducted by the National Golf Foundation, the LPGA and the PGA of America. In 1969, she was named LPGA Teacher of the Year.
Winter was a noted athlete before beginning her love affair with golf. She pitched with the Racine Belles in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943-50 and later served as a consultant for the film, "A League Of Their Own," which chronicled the women's league. After retiring from the diamond, she turned to golf and won the Arizona State Women's Championship in 1962.
